Primary Care
While an assessment of your child’s developmental milestones is part of each well-child exam, at the 18-20 month well-child exam we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire known as M-CHAT. Developed at the University of Connecticut, M-CHAT is widely recognized and recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is a screening tool designed to help pediatricians and other primary care professionals with the early identification of children with autism; the name stands for Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers. The M-CHAT does not provide a diagnosis, but it can indicate if a child is at risk and should receive further evaluation.

The physicians at Willows, together with our PAs, and APRN work together to ensure that we have flexible scheduling and can be responsive to urgent care and after-hours needs.

At the same time, we have seen how misinformation about vaccines has led some parents to delay or with hold vaccines, putting children at risk for illness. We understand the difficulty parents may have in sorting through the vast quantities of data on vaccine safety, and we are here to help guide you and answer all your vaccine-related questions.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmology
Enfant™ Computerized Vision Testing is recommended to screen children for ocular conditions that can cause amblyopia, starting between six to nine months of age, and continuing through four years of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus endorse instrument-based vision screening for patients beginning at age 6 month to ensure timely screening and allow for the early detection and treatment of eye and vision problems in children.

Gynecology
So for pregnant people, there is a vaccine that will be offered between 24 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. The goal of this vaccine is to pass protection to baby for the first 6 months of his/her life. Unfortunately, this vaccine has not completed all of the reviews and approvals needed so it is not yet available at this time, possibly later this fall. Please discuss this with your OB-GYN at your next visit.

Gastroenterology
Yes, if you have a healthy baby on a regular infant formula, then you can use any name or store brand infant formula. All infant formulas sold in the US are FDA approved to have the proper nutrition for normal growth and development. Here is a helpful list of equivalent formulas from North American Society For Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition. This will give you more options when you go to the store.

Autism
Like all pediatric practitioners, we play an important role in the early recognition of autism spectrum disorders. After your child’s 18-20 month well-visit we will evaluate and score your questionnaire. If there is any concern about your child’s development based on the M-CHAT results we will promptly call you to discuss the findings. If your child requires a referral to a specialist we will discuss with you what steps to take. On occasion, an abnormal score may be a “false positive” and does not indicate an autistic spectrum disorder, or it may point to another developmental issue that needs to be evaluated.

At any time, if a developmental delay is suspected, a child can be referred for further evaluation. If a problem is identified and early intervention is indicated, a child and family can then take advantage of specific therapies, such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy.
