This is a success story about Sarah Elyse Parker. She is a lovely, energetic 2 1/2 year old girl who came to Dr. Jeff at the end of August 2000 when, as a parent and decision maker for her health, I had reached a point of frustration with the conventional medical treatment Sarah Elyse was receiving at that time. At age 1, Sarah Elyse was diagnosed with “antibody specific deficiency” which basically means that she does not produce antibodies like an average healthy person of her age. She caught colds and ear infections and kept them for weeks. She had numerous food and environmental allergies that added to her poor health. She was grayish in color and losing weight. We received treatment from an allergist/immunologist for 1 year. Her food allergies were detailed by skin testing and she was given 2 prescription drugs for allergies to be taken twice a day. At age 1 1/2, although some improvement in her health was gained, she still did not sleep through the night. She was diagnosed with chronic acid reflux and given another prescription. During this time she also received an experimental treatment of a vaccine to jumpstart her immune system. She passes her second birthday and slowly her health began declining. She had chicken pox for 3 weeks, even though she received the vaccine. She caught a cold virus and was ill for 1 month. All the while, we are told to increase the doses of her medicines and she will improve, but here she is, not thriving, losing weight, and back on square one. The doctor then recommended another experimental vaccine to be given to her to boost immune function, increase her treatment for reflux to 2 teaspoons of Zantac a day, and to begin transfusions once a week of antibodies filtered from the general blood supply. When this treatment was proposed, I did as much research that I could find on the vaccine and the transfusions. I found that the vaccine caused death in several infants and auto-immune disorders and diabetes in children under age of 5. I talked to several parents who had children that received the transfusions of antibodies. They said it was a grueling process for the child (you must be admitted to the hospital and be transfused for 3 hours) and none of these parents said it helped significantly. It was at this time that I met Dr. Jeff at a health talk. After a long discussion and a few e-mails, I decided to bring her in to Dr. Jeff and postpone the more invasive treatments. Sarah Elyse’s transformation has been astonishing and wonderful. Her reflux went away after only 1 week of adjustments. She has only had 2 sick days related to her environmental allergies, but we have been able to manage that with herbs. She no longer takes prescription drugs and has been healthier than her peers at school thus far. Dr. Jeff had some his gentle work and now her healing system is turned on. Emergency Care
For as many years as I can remember, I have had neck pain; however, several months ago, I had a time of intense and excruciating pain ending up in the emergency room for pain relief twice in as many weeks in pre-dawn hours. During the next two weeks, I was never out of pain and could not sleep except sitting up. I also had eight weeks of physical therapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy...as well as muscle relaxers and narcotics. Some or all of the above eased my pain, but I still used ice, heat, and pain relievers.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
My name is Deanna, I am 25 yrs old and I have had stomach problems most all of my life the pains were so bad I would have sweats and my legs would get weak after just one pain that would last for about 10 seconds. they slowly started getting more frequent as I got older. I decided to go to the doctor and I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and given a bunch of medicine samples. the medicine helped but i soon ran out of samples and since I was told that I could not do anything but take medicine for the pain just to cover up the symptoms it was not worth paying the doctors fees and staying on medicine all of my life. I was also told that 80% of the population had the same problem. I found out that they diagnose irritable bowel syndrome when they cannot find anything else wrong so I did not really get anything accomplished by going to the doctor.

I began having headaches over two years ago. They started slowing going from one every couple of weeks to once a week to every day. The daily headaches lasted for over three months. It was when they affected my mental health that I finally decided to get some help. As a mom of three, there seemed to be little time to care for my personal needs but I realized I was not being the mom they needed me to be when I lost patience with them and had to go to bed early or take naps to help ease the pain from the headaches.

MRI
At first I tried stretching and strengthening exercises to correct the problem, along with over-the-counter pain medication before seeking medical help. My family doctor prescribed an anti-inflammatory and a muscle relaxer, which provided little relief. An MRI was ordered after my second visit; however, the test was not approved by my health insurance company which wanted me to visit a neurosurgeon. When discussing my situation one Sunday at church with a friend who is a Physician’s Assistant, I leared that the “MRI shows the surgeon where to cut,” and that a lot of my friend’s patients had been helped by Chiropractors. I was already reluctant to see a surgeon as my wife has had two back surgeries and is facing another.
Radiology
My first concern was there may be something wrong in my head that was creating pressure on my brain. After a visit to my doctor, he sent me to Athens Radiology for a MRI & MRA. My mother had an aneurism at about my age and this was a concern to both of us. Both results came back clear but the headaches continued. Being a big fan of physical therapy (for my kids with their many soccer injuries) I began a treatment of manual traction. No results with this either. My doctor decided to prescribe various medications such s seizure meds then depression meds...neither of which worked and had negative side effects.

Whiplash
My physical health problems started in 1997 when I was in a car wreck. I had symptoms of whiplash within two weeks of the accident. Also, I fell off a boat in 1998 onto concrete pavement resulting in a brain fracture. I dealt with these two issues for more than 6 years going to two different doctors and the Morris Clinic. I also took many kinds of drugs to help with pain management. For instance, I have taken, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Celebrex, and Flexeril to help me cope with everyday life and my job of teaching.
Pinched Nerve
My problems started a long time ago with an injury that happened at work. I lifted a box the wrong way and severely sprained my back. I was later diagnosed as having a pinched nerve in my lower back. This caused numbness and tingling in my right leg and lots of pain as well. When my back was at its worse, I had a hard time just walking. It is hard to walk when your leg is numb. Something as simple as rolling over in bed was painful. Also, I had migraine headaches.. I have been dealing with headaches all my life; whether from mental stress or other things. I was given drugs to take care of the pain. My life would be put on hold until my migraine would ease up. And I was having at least two per month and regular headaches at least every day. Usually I would wake up with a headache. All of the doctors that I went to would just give me more pills for my headaches and sometimes the drugs would make me feel even worse. As for my back, I was not ready for surgery yet.
Knee Replacement
It was beginning of February of 2006 that I came to Davenport Family Chiropractic. Because I am 73 years old with a new total knee replacement, generalized osteo-arthritis, and 20 lbs overweight, I marvel at the improvement in my pain level. I had imagined that the chiropractic adjustments would hurt...quite the contrary; I look forward to the treatment. I have scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine) which has been with me for a long time, so I don’t expect miracles. Having relief from constant pain and coming to a caring doctor who listens and seems sincere in his efforts to work with you is most rewarding. I certainly recommend chiropractic care to anyone!
