Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness for people over 60 years old. But blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented with early treatment.
Ophthalmology
Like Dr. Reingold, Dr. Lori Birndorf also comes from a medical family. The daughter of an internist, her father was on staff at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank for 30 years, where today she is a member of the department of surgery. Originally from Chicago, Dr. Birndorf and her family moved out to southern California when she was still very young. She received her undergraduate degree from Pomona College in Claremont, CA, and then attended medical school in East Lansing at Michigan State University. Dr. Birndorf then completed an internship in general medicine in Detroit, Michigan followed by an additional internship specializing in ophthalmology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a problem with your retina. It happens when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. With AMD you lose your central vision. You cannot see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far. But your peripheral (side) vision will still be normal. For instance, imagine you are looking at a clock with hands. With AMD, you might see the clock’s numbers but not the hands. AMD is very common. It is a leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years or older.
Laser Eye Surgery
Glasses and/or contact lenses to correct your vision have become a thing of the past in Los Angeles. Reingold Eye Center offers the latest in vision correction technologies, LASIK is a refractive procedure that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and Astigmatism by reshaping the front surface the cornea. LASIK can significantly improve eyesight and reduce the need for glasses and/or contact lenses; allowing individuals the freedom to ENJOY life.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye and obstructs the passage of light. A cataract can vary from slight to complete opacity, and in the early stages of its development, may be corrected with glasses or a change in prescription. As the cataract grows, it can begin to affect your lifestyle and may need to be removed. Cataracts are a sign of growing old, but they do not have to affect your quality of life.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery involves a few steps, all of which are done without hospitalization. After treating your eye with anesthetic, a very small incision is made through which a tiny probe is inserted to break up and vacuum out the clouded lens. A new, clear lens is then inserted through that opening, which opens and restores your vision.

Your ophthalmologist can tell you if vitamins and minerals are recommended for your dry AMD, as not all forms will benefit from the AREDS supplements. Beta carotene should not be used by smokers as it raised the risk of lung cancer.

Diabetic Retinopathy
People with diabetes can have an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy. This is when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. These blood vessels can swell and leak. Or they can close, stopping blood from passing through. Sometimes abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina. All of these changes can steal your vision.

Ultrasound
How is traditional cataract surgery done? Phacoemulsification is the name for traditional cataract surgery. Your surgeon creates a small incision in your cornea by hand with a scalpel. They insert a small instrument through this opening. It goes behind your pupil where the eye’s lens sits in a capsule. Your surgeon creates a round opening in the capsule. Then your surgeon inserts a pen-shaped probe through that opening. The probe applies sound waves (ultrasound) to break up the cloudy lens. Then the surgeon suctions out the broken-up pieces. They replace your lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) The surgeon closes the incision with a special liquid and self-seal. Stitches are commonly not needed.
