If a surgical option is deemed appropriate for you, typically it is done in conjunction with other therapies to optimize your sleep. This may include weight-loss, changes in sleep habits and hygiene, as well as need for continued use of CPAP despite surgical intervention. Some patients will need breathing assistance using CPAP even after surgery.
Pediatric Care
Pediatric ENT provides for the unique needs of the pediatric patient. Children with medically complex problems such as craniofacial anomalies, prematurity, immune deficiencies and airway abnormalities are best cared for by physicians who have extensive training and experience in pediatric care of the head and neck. Dr. Parhizkar works in conjunction with other pediatric subspecialty services at Childrens Hospital & Research Center Oakland to provide sophisticated treatment for the medically complex pediatric patient.
Snoring
After two years in private practice, she returned to academic medicine for subspecialty training in Pediatric ENT. Dr. Parhizkar completed a comprehensive fellowship in Pediatric ENT at University of Washington, Seattle Children's Hospital. A Bay Area native, she is now back with her husband and son, enjoying the California sun. Dr Parhizkar practices the full gamut of Adult and Pediatric ENT. Her interests include adult sinus disease, snoring and sleep apnea, voice disorders as well as pediatric hearing loss and otologic surgery, congenital malformations (including lymphatic malformations, hemangiomas, cleft lip & palate), obstructive sleep apnea, and pediatric Head and Neck masses.
Ear Infections
One of most common conditions in children is middle ear infections (otitis media). US consensus estimates nearly 10 million children are treated each year for ear infections. This condition also occurs in adults, but usually much less frequently.
Sleep Disorders
Sleep is a vital part of your child's growth and development. If you find that your little one snores often, gasps for air at night, stops breathing, wakes up tired, or has restless sleep, it would be wise to have a consultation with your pediatrician and Pediatric ENT. It is important to determine if your little one is suffering from sleep apnea.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
When a child's breathing is obstructed during sleep it can affect the body in many ways. For instance, the heart rate slows, the nervous system is stimulated, blood pressure rises, the brain is aroused and sleep is disrupted. Repeated interruptions to sleep and sleep apnea can cause your child to be deprived of sleep, resulting in crankiness and ill behavior. Sleep disorder breathing in children has been linked to bed-wetting, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cognitive impairments. It is important to know that even mild sleep apnea can lead to accumulated sleep deficiency and affect his/her cognition, especially between the ages of six to ten.
Stress Management
It is important to recognize that sleep disorder breathing is typically a multifactorial process. Good sleep hygiene and a healthy lifestyle, as well as stress management, are an integral part of optimizing one's sleep patterns. Specifically, if it is identified that there is an upper airway resistance and/or obstruction that is leading to your sleep issues, that also is often multifactorial and requires a comprehensive evaluation to develop management strategies.
