Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain, is damaged. Glaucoma is usually associated with high intraocular pressure, which is elevated pressure inside the eye. The exact cause of primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease, is uncertain, but it is known to be associated with a family history of the disease.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Romaniv has an interest in international ophthalmology, and had travelled with the International Vision Volunteers to Zambia in Africa to provide free eye care and surgery. She is fluent in English and Ukrainian as well as conversational in Russian and Spanish.
Macular Degeneration
Ultra-violet light – both UV-A and the more damaging UV-B rays - can be harmful to the eyes, and can contribute to the development of pterygium, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
ILASIK is an all-laser bladeless procedure that utilizes the latest technology to optimize results. Traditional LASIK relies on a basic vision prescription to guide the laser vision correction. iLASIK combines three cutting edge technologies and is available at New Vision Laser Center. We are one of the only iLASIK providers in the area.
Cataracts
The lens of the eye is responsible for focusing light onto the retina. When this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. The most common form is age-related cataract usually starting after the age of 50. Other causes of cataract include eye injuries, certain diseases such as diabetes and genetic conditions, medications such as steroids, ultraviolet light, and smoking.
Cataract Surgery
For patients with astigmatism who are having cataract surgery or Clear Lens Exchange, the astigmatism can now be corrected at the time of surgery with a Toric Intra-Ocular Lens (Toric IOL).
Eye Exam
At New Vision Laser Center, we put an emphasis on educating you about all the potential risks and benefits of LASIK to help you make an informed decision. Prior to your procedure at New Vision Laser Center, you will have a free consultation and eye examination by your surgeon, Dr. Vakharia, which gives you plenty of time to consider all of your options and ask any questions you may have.

Dr. Vakharia is a suburban Chicago native who earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Cornell University in New York. He did his Internal Medicine internship at Evanston Northwestern Hospital and attended the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center for his residency training in Ophthalmology. Dr. Vakharia completed a fellowship in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at the University of California Davis, the premier training program in the country under the direction of Dr. Mark Mannis.

Diabetic Retinopathy
The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye. It acts like the film in a camera -- images come through the eye's cornea and lens and are focused on the retina. The retina then converts these images to electric signals and sends them via the optic nerve to the brain. Conditions which do not allow the retina to function properly include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal artery and vein occlusions, as well as infectious and inflammatory retinal diseases. Patients with these and other conditions should see a retina specialist for diagnostic testing including OCT imaging, and medical or surgical treatments including intraocular injections, laser surgery and vitrectomy surgery.

Ultrasound
The preoperative evaluation for LASIK includes a precise measurement of your vision prescription five different ways, including by two different computers and by Dr. Vakharia. Dr. Vakharia then performs a full eye examination including a dilated retinal exam, all pertinent testing of your eyes including corneal mapping, ultrasound corneal thickness and intraocular pressure, and a custom wavefront measurement of the higher order aberrations in your visual system. Dr. Vakharia will use all of this information to program the laser accurately for your procedure.

Botox
At New Vision Laser Center, patients can consult with Dr. Bradley N. Lemke, an eye plastic surgeon and a clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison, during a weekly eye plastic surgery clinic. Dr. Lemke performs surgery locally, and manages treatment of a broad range of eyelid and orbital conditions including facial reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and Botox injections. Dr. Lemke is an independent practitioner and is not affiliated with New Vision.
Eyelid Surgery
Complete eye health includes having healthy eyes and healthy eyelids. Common eyelid problems include excess eyelid skin, droopy eyelids, eyelids that turn inward or outward, or wrinkles around the eyelids and eyebrows. These problems can cause eye discomfort, limit your vision and affect your appearance â€“ but they can be corrected with eyelid plastic surgery, which is almost always performed on an outpatient basis. The improvement in vision, comfort and appearance of the eyes after eyelid surgery can be very gratifying.
