Dental Examination

X-rays
The information provided by dental x-rays is invaluable in detecting dental problems including dental decay, abscess formation, periodontal disease and dental pathology. They are equally important in establishing baseline information as well as the absence of disease. The frequency of having radiographs taken should be specific to the patient and not based on an arbitrary timeframe- patients who are in excellent oral health with minimal prior treatment do not need to have them as frequently as someone who has had moderate to extensive treatment in the past. With the advent of digital radiographs, the amount of radiation exposure from a dental radiograph is insignificant - On average, your body is exposed to 3.1 millisieverts (mSv) of natural radiation alone per year. At. 005 mSv, the radiation you receive from the aforementioned dental x-ray is less than 1.6% of your daily background radiation exposure.

Teeth cleaning (dental prophylaxis) is a dental procedure that should be completed only after a complete examination of your oral condition including a review of any necessary x-rays. Having your teeth cleaned without an examination and appropriate x-rays could allow gum disease, dental decay, and other oral conditions to go undetected and untreated. At our practice, We will always schedule a comprehensive examination appointment as described in the services section of the website prior to a dental hygiene appointment to ensure all aspects of your dental health are properly addressed. Dental hygiene appointments are scheduled for a full hour after the comprehensive examination appointment.

Our patient was a 60 year old male who desired the best restorations for several broken/decayed back teeth. We fabricated gold restorations for him which are the best fitting, most conservative, and strongest of any dental material. If esthetics are not a great concern and strength is a primary concern, gold is the optimal choice.
Veneers
The first thing that many patients looking to improve their smile think of are veneers because they read about them in the magazines and see the pictures of the movie stars with beautiful white teeth - that this option while expensive will give them the smile that they’ve always wanted in a very short period of time. In the right patient, veneers are a wonderful treatment option and can provide the patient a life-changing service. Unfortunately, veneers are oftentimes presented as the best option without much discussion of the longterm implications of this decision for the patient. Veneers are in fact the least desirable option for many patients; particularly for the young patient. with veneers, the healthy enamel of the tooth needs to be removed and this option can oftentimes involve multiple teeth (sometimes 12-14 teeth) - once completed, the patient unfortunately can be on the path to a lifetime of ongoing future treatment. Fracture of the veneer(s), recurrent decay, recession of the gum tissue, tooth sensitivity are all potential future problems that did not exist prior to the veneers. Having veneers placed without the preparation of the teeth generally will either result in a bulky non-aesthetic smile or veneers that are so thin that the strength of the material is compromised and fracture is likely in the future.
Crowns
A crown or "cap" is a dental restoration that covers the entire surface of the tooth restoring the tooth back to its normal size/shape. Crowns are used to strengthen a compromised tooth due to decay or fracture or to improve the appearance of a tooth.
Bridges
Dental implants have been a wonderful treatment option for thousands of people- they can provide support for a single tooth, multiple teeth and even a complete set of teeth. In the not-too-distant past, the only options for replacing teeth were fixed bridges using the remaining teeth or removable partial and complete dentures. Dental implants have fortunately provided us many more options for our patients; However, dental implants and the restorations that are supported by them are far from being problem free - is there anything in this world that truly lasts forever - particularly something that is used 24 hours a day/7 days a week? Dental implants are a medical prosthesis similar to an artificial knee or hip that oftentimes needs “revision or replacement surgery” at some point in the future; there is a cost and time involved in doing this. Although decay is not something that will affect dental implants, if the implants and prosthesis are not planned and fabricated or maintained properly or if the biting forces are excessive, they will lose bone, loosen or break. Screw loosening of the restoration, discoloration, wear, or fracture of the acrylic, porcelain or zirconium are other potential future complications - the management of these complications can be challenging, costly, and at times nontreatable. Additionally, the surgical phase of a Hybrid prosthesis can involve extensive bone removal to fabricate the prosthesis. Unfortunately, there is multi-media marketing today often driven by corporations That everyone sees on TV with smiling models presenting implant-retained (Hybrid) dentures as a panacea for all patients - “everything completed in one day” or “everything completed in an hour”. Unfortunately, many of the patients who go this route could have probably been treated more conservatively with far less cost. The marketing that is used in these ads does not reveal the implications of such treatment that go far beyond the financial.
Dental Bonding
We restored the tooth with direct composite bonding which is much more conservative and minimally invasive compared to a crown. The patient and parents were very happy with the result.

Root Canal Treatment
The condition of the tooth prior to preparing it for a crown -was there extensive decay or filling material, did it have a prior root canal (that weakens the tooth). Everything else being equal, The more good tooth structure remaining correlates to a longer lasting crown.
