Overall

Summary: Upon move in, my unit was severely infested with cockroaches. I had to break my lease early. I did not get enough compensation for what I experienced. Living here wasn’t worth it in regards to the rent I had to pay for the conditions of the property.

This apartment review is for May 2015. Formerly “The Belle Isle Terrace”, now renamed “The Belle Isle”. The property received new management owners (Logic Management around September 2014 or so). I asked 2 current residents if they had issues. They reported no issues worth moving out (noise level, maintenance issues, insects). The new management seemed to make things promising with their attempts to improve the property: renovated units, new floors and appliances, paid water and gas. The manager was cordial and attentive to my needs.

On my move in day, I literally saw the hardwood floor covered in a “carpet” of dead roach carcasses. I still saw some crawling around. I was disappointed that I had to spend a lot of time trying to clean it up before I could place my items in. My washer and dryer were not hooked up. I was missing a light bulb on the porch light, and the front door trim panel was not painted yet. I expressed my concerns with the manager on Monday (another con leasing office is closed on weekends). The issue would be taken care of as far as doing weekly pest control to minimize the population.

Weeks carried on, the issue did not improve for my satisfaction. I still saw 5-6 roaches in the span of just 1-3 hours. I never unpacked my belongings from my boxes. I never even cooked or used the appliances. I feel traumatized seeing live roaches in the groove of the microwave and dead roaches on top of the new unused stove... I had them caulk and seal some holes, but I still saw a steady influx of roaches: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room - everywhere.

I demanded compensation as far as a refund of my initial month’s rent. I then just asked to have my termination of lease fee cancelled. I was only offered half of my first month’s rent. I was extremely livid when the supervisor of the apartment said that “the apartment is liveable” even when there was a presented bag of dead roaches shown to her. She asked if those roaches were dead as if they were a trivial situation because “at least the roaches are dead”. It doesn’t matter if the roaches are dead. There are live and dead ones I had to pick up. The –amount—of roaches present in the unit is the main concern. The whole building is severely infested. The other residents say that pest control spraying does not do anything to get rid of the problem. They are German cockroaches –light band in the middle and two black bands on side of the back. I asked other residents living in the property. Some residents living in other buildings did not have a roach issue. This review is a word of caution to other prospective tenants.

In the end, I lost money and was left feeling dissatisfied of my whole experience.
