While treating hundreds of Chronic Lyme patients in my Maryland-based Family Practice in recent years, I was fortunate to come upon an already existing but little noticed physiologic test of optic nerve function - the " Visual Contrast Sensitivity" test, or VCS - that can tell a physician in five minutes whether or not the patient is suffering from the harmful effects of neurotoxins on the brain's ability to distinguish contrast between black, white and gray. The optic nerve deficit mirrors the adverse effect of neurotoxins throughout the body.

Infected worms were also found in five tissue specimens from patients who succumbed to the highly malignant brain tumor Glioblastoma multiforme, the same cancer which took the life of Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA). Ironically, in 1993, Senator Kennedy chaired a hearing of the Labor and Human Resources committee titled: Lyme disease: A Diagnostic and Treatment Dilemma. Finally, four specimens from patients who died from Lewy Body dementia, the same illness which afflicted comedian Robin Williams, also showed the presence of infected nematodes.

Die SPECT erlaubt, die Perfusion einzelner Bereiche des Gehirns darzustellen.... Alle 183 untersuchten Individuen erfüllten laut Autoren die Kriterien einer chronischen Lyme Borreliose. Perfusionsstörungen, vor allem im Frontal-, Schläfen- und Scheitellappen, wurden bei 75% der Patienten gefunden, bei seropositiven Patienten ebenso wie bei seronegativen Patienten. Verbesserungen oder komplette Normalisierung der Perfusion wurde bei 70% der behandelten Patienten nach mindestens 3 monatiger Gabe vor allem intrazellulär wirkender Antibiotika in einem Zeitraum von 1 bis 2 Jahren gesehen. Abnormalitäten im SPECT Scan, so die Autoren, werden bei der Mehrheit der Patienten/Innen mit chronischer Borreliose gesehen.

Impression It is noteworthy that this patient has had very very extensive epidemiologic exposure risk for ticks. In my experience it is somewhat unusual to have brain leasions so soon after occurrence of erythema migrans. One wonders whether or not the erythema migrans lesion that she had August 1997 was in fact her first exposure to Lyme disease. It is conceivable to me that she may have been exposed and harbored a latent or inapparent central nervous system infection with Borrelia long prior to manifest symptoms. On the other hand, she was absolutely and totally without any symptoms whatsoever prior to August 1997 raising the possibility that all of her symptomatology including the development of central nervous system lesions might have been due to a fulminant central nervous system involvement by Lyme disease.
