CarolinaEast Diagnostic Center is a freestanding, state-of-the-art outpatient imaging center. Our goal is to provide our patients with convenient and compassionate care. The center provides digital radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT, nuclear medicine imaging, diagnostic and vascular ultrasound, digital mammography and bone densitometry. Additionally, we are the only imaging center in New Bern to offer stereotactic breast biopsies and needle localization procedures. A few years earlier, a New Bern physician, Dr. Dale Millns, and two community leaders, Larry B. Pate and Robert Stallings, identified the crucial need in this area for one, full-service hospital. After convincing the county commissioners of the critical need, the Craven County Hospital Corporation was formed and purchased the 75-bed St. Luke's Hospital from the Sisters of Saint Joseph, who had run it as a private facility for many years. The purchase price for the building and all equipment was $55,000, but it would only be a temporary home for the new county hospital. (The beautiful, historic building, located on the corner of George and Broad streets in downtown New Bern, has been renovated and is now home to the Neuse Center for Mental Health.)

Ultrasound

Working with the latest equipment—including a PET-CT, two state-of-the-art MRI systems (one at CarolinaEast and a second system at CarolinaEast Diagnostic Center), and PACS (picture archival and storage), our imaging department offers an environment that encourages teamwork and true collaboration. We also make sure we're adequately staffed so you can focus entirely on delivering outstanding patient care; and because students do rotations at CarolinaEast, you'll have the chance to share your knowledge with the next generation of imaging professionals. Our radiology department offers the latest in technology regarding diagnostic and interventional services. This includes x-ray, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and angiography. The radiology department uses digital imaging throughout all modalities (film usage is no longer necessary.) Converting the entire department to a PACS environment has enabled us to add the most current technology. Computed radiography and digital radiography were added shortly after PACS was installed. All of these innovations have enabled radiology to manage and distribute images electronically.
Radiology
MYTH. Very high radiation doses can harm eggs or sperm. But the amount of radiation used in diagnostic radiology is very low. No studies have shown that low-level radiation exposure to eggs or sperm causes birth defects or miscarriage. Even cancer patients whose ovaries received fairly high levels of radiation have shown no negative lasting effects.

Our imaging services are provided through our Radiology Department and Diagnostic Center, our Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Lab and our Nuclear Medicine Department.
Mammography
Computed Tomography
For comparison, the radiation you receive from an x-ray of your ankle is 0.001 mSv. That’s equal to 3 hours of natural radiation. A CT scan of your lungs imparts 1.5 mSv, or the equivalent of six months of natural radiation. Even that amount is considered a very low health risk.
Chemotherapy
Infusion therapy is an effective way to treat a variety of conditions. Through an IV or catheter you can receive treatments like antibiotics, chemotherapy, fluids, iron and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVG) delivered directly into your bloodstream.
Radiation Therapy
Prostate cancer. We're the only practice east of Raleigh that offers fusion-guided biopsies for prostate cancer. We can also perform a new treatment called SpaceOAR that helps protect the rectum during radiation therapy for prostate cancer. If surgery is necessary, we have doctors on staff who are trained to perform robotic prostatectomy.
