Spiders
In El Dorado County, spiders are a common occurrence. Although they are more plentiful in the late summer and early fall, they can also be a problem in winter. During the cold winter months, spiders will huddle up next to a house for warmth and protection from the weather. They prefer to live outside but occasionally will come inside.
Fleas
The reasons for the sudden emergence of fleas in the dead of winter are determined by the unique life cycle of the flea. Fleas undergo a complete metamorphoses. They go from egg to larvae, to pupae or cocoon before becoming adults. This maturation process from egg to adult can occur in as little as 23 days or take up to a year. The flea life cycle begins when the female lays eggs after feeding. Adult fleas must feed on blood before they are capable of reproduction.
Cockroaches
Because of their habit of infesting kitchens, the German cockroach is commonly called the kitchen roach. The adult is a little over 1/2 inch in length, light brown in color, and has 2 stripes running down its back. German roaches don’t need a lot of food so even the cleanest environments can become infested. They like to hang around in warm, moist places such as refrigerator motors and wall voids near a food source. German roaches used to be extremely difficult to control. But baits and growth regulators have made controlling them much more effective in the last couple decades.
Bees
Wasps
The Rescue trap uses a liquid attractant or pheromone to lure wasps into the trap. The liquid attractant can be purchased at most hardware stores and should be used in conjunction with lean meat such as turkey or ham. The meat should be replaced every few days or before it spoils. Tuna, cat food, and other meat can be used but tend to spoil faster and require more frequent replacements. We recommend putting your traps out early. Every queen caught at the beginning of the season will eliminate a potential 5,000 Yellow Jackets later.
Flies
We recommend the yellow cylindrical “Rescue” traps made by Sterling. The Rescue traps are reusable, but if you are using traps from last year, they should be cleaned first. A stinky, moldy trap can actually repel Yellow Jackets. If the trap is catching flies then it needs to be cleaned or replaced.
Beetles
Treatment for weeds, firebreaks, and tree spraying for oak work and beetles also requires a free evaluation and inspection prior to service.
Scorpions
Yellow Jackets
To help minimize the number of Yellow Jackets during the summer time, trapping should be started now. Even if you don’t catch the queens, by catching even a few of the first emerging workers can stress the nest and cause it to be much smaller during the peak of the season.
Moths
Aphids
Another interesting aspect of the Argentine ant is their relationship with plant insects such as aphids and scale. The ants harvest the honeydew produced by these insects and will actually carry aphids from branch to branch to harvest the honeydew. One way to lessen an Argentine ant population in your garden is to eliminate aphids and scale. Use of a non-repellant pesticides and bait will control these pesky critters.
Rodent control and nuisance animals may require trapping. We always provide free evaluations and explanations of available methods prior to starting any job.
Mice
Koby Pest Control is a state-certified pest control company with more than 17 years’ experience ridding Greater Sacramento homes and properties of mice and rats.
Rats
Rodent baits can be very effective in eliminating infestations, but they should be used cautiously. Rodent baits cause mice and rats to become dehydrated and eventually die. The theory is that the rodent will go outside to seek water. Often times the rodent may not make it outside and will die in the structure, causing a stench. We recommend trapping rodents first and sealing off their entry points after.
