There are two types of CRVO: ischemic and non-ischemic. The "ischemia" refers to cases where the flow of blood has been compromised in the arterioles as well and thus parts of the retina are not receiving blood. The disctintion between ischemic and non-ischemic is based on findings on a fluorescein angiogram. Both types of CRVO may have swelling in the center of vision called macular edema. This is often treated with intraocular injection of anti-VEGF (Lucentis, Eylea, or Avastin) or steroid medications. Many patients with non-ischemic macular edema will recover vision through these treatments. Eyes with ischemic CRVO usually have worse vision and are more likely to go on to having complications. The main complication is the growth of new abnormal blood vessels (neovascularization) which may clog the outflow path of eye fluids and cause high pressure. This high pressure may cause the eye to lose further vision and become painful. Patients with CRVO are typically followed monthly for the first few months to check for development of neovascularization. These new vessels are first noticed on the iris. In these cases, patients will often receive pan-retinal laser photocoagulation in addition to anti-VEGF injection. Sometimes vitrectomy or glaucoma surgery becomes necessary as well

Macular Degeneration
Optical Coherence Tomography is a non-invasive imaging test performed in the office. Microscopic detail of the layers of the retina can be seen providing information helpful to guiding treatment of many macular diseases including macular edema, macular pucker, macular holes, and age-related macular degeneration. Light waves are reflected from the retina and analyzed to create this very detailed image. Our offices use the most advanced type of OCT imaging. Cataracts
As with other specialties, ophthalmologists can use ultrasound to study the structure of the eye. Often called B-scan, this is typically used when the view to the back of the eye is not clear, such as with vitreous hemorrhage, corneal scarring, or a dense cataract. This test is also used to better evaluate and measure tumors in the eye. This test is performed through the eyelid in the office. No anesthesia is needed and there is no pain with this procedure. Eye Exam
Whenever one sees a sudden onset of floater with or without flashes, an eye examination should be sought to rule out a retinal tear.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindess in working age adults in the United States. Diabetes affects several major systems in the body. It can cause kidney failure, nerve damage, and vascular damage. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Ultrasound
MRI
Fluorescein angiography (OCT) is an office procedure which involves injection of a dye called fluorescein into the bloodstream then photographing the movement of the dye through the retina. This test can provide valuable information to diagnose and guide treatment for many diseases including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein occlusion, and many inherited conditions. The most common adverse effect is a transient feeling of nausea, which occurs in about 10% of patients. This dye is not related to other dyes used in MRI, CT, or IVP testing. Chemotherapy
Symptoms of uveitis may include: reduced vision, red eyes, eye pain, and sensitivity to light. Oral therapies include antibiotics, steroids, or chemotherapy. Topical therapyusually involvessteroid and dilating eye drops.
