Fibromyalgia
Dr. Hinkle recommended acupuncture for her patient, Kristie May, whose pain linked to fibromyalgia had her at wit's end. "I was dealing with pain on a daily basis," she says "and the pain was about as much as I could stand." A crippling burden on its own, the pain led to almost constant exhaustion, which was wreaking havoc with her responsibilities as owner of the Little Beacon Preschool in Lynchburg. But after the first few treatments, she says, "The pain was dramatically reduced. I came off almost all of the medications I was on. It's been much, much better for my body." She returns to Miller about once a week to remain pain-free.
Medical Weight Loss
Acupuncture has a valuable role to play in the palliative care of cancer patients. Besides helping with nausea and vomiting, acupuncture can effectively treat pain, xerostomia (dry mouth), breathlessness, hot flashes, edema, depression and other symptoms associated with either the cancer itself or the cancer therapy. In one controlled trial of 69 patients with lung cancer, the acupuncture treatment group showed significant increase in CD4 and CD11 cells as well as a reduction in digestive, respiratory and mental symptoms. (Ouyang, Cao &Cao 1992). In a randomized controlled trial of 76 patients with lung, esophagus or stomach cancer receiving radiotherapy or chemotherapy, the acupuncture group had significantly smaller weight loss, as well as improvement of symptoms and increase in lymphocyte rosette formation. (Xia et al 1986) (see section on IMMUNOLOGY )
Stroke Rehabilitation
Numerous studies on the use of acupuncture in the treatment of central nervous system conditions have appeared in Asian medical literature, much of it on stroke rehabilitation. Unfortunately, only a small amount of this research has been translated into English or reviewed by Western medical peers.
Primary Care
"In August 2004 after a summer of tennis and golf, I began to experience neck pain on the right side. Hoping that it would go away, I did nothing; however, the pain began to radiate into my shoulder and upper right arm. I was told by my primary care doctor that I probably had a “pinched nerve” or cervical impingement and was given two injections, one for pain and one an anti-inflammatory. The next morning I awoke feeling somewhat sick and groggy. When I reached for a cup, I found that I could not raise my right arm. Again, hoping that the symptom would subside, I waited over the weekend before calling the doctor again. This time an MRI was ordered and an appointment made with a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon saw nothing alarming in the MRI and hoped that 10 days of home traction (utter misery!) would help. When nothing had improved in the allotted time I was sent to a neurologist who administered a nerve conductivity test. This showed that I had significant nerve damage to the brachial plexus area (where the nerves meet in the shoulder). I was told that nerves heal slowly, sometimes taking six months to a year, and the neurosurgeon concurred that I did not need surgery but would simply have to be patient. The diagnosis was “brachial plexus neuritis”, and no one could explain what had caused the seemingly sudden onset. (At this point I was pain free, thanks to the initial injection and a “steroid pack’); however, I could hardly raise my arm enough to brush my teeth or comb my hair. I could hardly pick up a full glass and drink from it, and life as I had known it was certainly changed.
Family Practice
Another physician-believer is Leah H. Hinkle, M.D., a family practice specialist in Forest who says that, although she doesn't have a detailed understanding of how it works, "it does work. With thousands of years of Chinese medicine, you can't go wrong." She sends patients to Miller for relief from ailments as widespread as insomnia, migraines, and complex pain issues.

"I was on the maximum pain medication I could take along with three others for pain, sleeping and depression. I felt like a 38 year old lady in a 98 year old body. It hurt to get up, walk, work, drive or do basic daily activities. I researched and prayed about the doctor's suggestion. I decided to give acupuncture a try. To be honest during the first session I said to myself, what in the world am I doing here and why am I paying this man to stick needles in me! It didn't take long to get past this because when I left I went home and fell into a deep sleep without any medication. This is something I had not been able to do in 10 months. After two days I had relief from my pain. It was amazing! The pain relief is a true blessing but, I have also experienced a sense of well being. My feeling of depression has lessened. I am calmer and less irritable. I feel like myself again. I no longer feel like that grumpy, hurting 98 year old woman. My T.M.J. is no longer keeping me up at night and my irritable bowel syndrome attacks have gone from daily to once or twice a month. I no longer take pain medication daily, matter of fact it is rarely I take it now. The benefits that I experienced after beginning acupuncture treatment have persisted for over three months now.

Strengthening the immune system can play a very important role in conception. The neurotransmitters that are released by the brain during acupuncture can raise the amount of white blood cells, T-cells and antibodies in the body thereby increasing the body’s level of immunity. This becomes important when there are immunological causes for fertility or failed implantation issues. An overactive immune system can also cause unwanted inflammation in the reproductive organs. This is particularly true for women with endometriosis. "I recently was treated by Matt Miller at East West Acupuncture and wanted to share my experiences in hopes they might be helpful to others with similar issues. I am a practicing dentist in Lynchburg, and I have been bothered for almost ten years with severe headaches that often interfered with my work. I experienced anywhere from one to three severe headaches per week, lasting from several hours up to, more commonly, two to three days. I have a history of cervical disk problems and had surgery to deal with these ten years ago, with the onset of the headaches at about the same time. Since then, neurology work-ups were negative and I was told my headaches were a byproduct of the neck problems and the subsequent surgery.

Specifically, acupuncture has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain in a number of areas of the musculoskeletal system, including the lower back, the elbow, the neck, the shoulder, the hip and the knee. Acupuncture appears to be equal in effect to more conventional therapies (steroid injections, NSAIDs, ultrasound) and has a noticeable lack of side-effects (Berry et al 1980). Acupuncture can also be used in the short term for acute pain, such as that in the back, and may be the preferred form of therapy when muscle spasm is present. Acupuncture can be used to relieve stiffness and has been shown to increase significantly the range of movement of knees joints of patients with severe osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat stress, anxiety and depression. It has been shown to influence various neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, including noradrenaline and serotonin. Indeed, the most common "side-effect" of acupuncture treatment reported by patients is a feeling of calm and an improved sense of well-being. Patients often describe themselves as feeling relaxed, even mildly disoriented, and often “more whole” or “connected.” Functional MRI studies have shown that various centers in the brain, including the limbic system (the “emotional brain”), are activated by acupuncture.

One of the studies cited by the NIH was conducted by Abass Alavi, M.D., chief of nuclear medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, who showed that acupuncture affects the flow of blood in the brain. He used SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) to view the brains of four people with pain and five pain-free people who served as the control group. Dr. Alavi found that after acupuncture needles were inserted, all of the patients had increased blood flow to the thalamus, the area of the brain that relays pain and other sensory messages. Because the brains of the pain-free group showed the same reactions as those with pain, the changes in blood flow couldn’t be attributed to placebo.

Prospective, randomised controlled trial, with three parallel groups, patient and observer blinded for verum and sham acupuncture and a follow up of 3 months. 174 patients met the protocol criteria and reported after treatment, 124 reported after 3 months follow up. CONCLUSIONS: Our conclusion is that acupuncture can be an important supplement of conservative orthopedic treatment in the management of chronic LBP.
