Overall

I recently had a stay in the psychiatry department. A short little nurse named Denise insisted on embarrassing me by leaving my door opened even when I told her to shut it three times. She had zero consideration for my dignity; laying in bed in front of strangers embarrasses me. She also continued talking to me after I asked not to, with the door opened, as I was using the bathroom. Her IMMEDIATE and only response to me demanding to have my door shut was to threaten me with a "mattress pulling order". Up until then, I had had every intention of getting up and doing what was expected of me, if only I could have reasonable privacy to get out of bed. Contrary to what she may have thought, taking my dignity away does not cause me to get out of bed faster. It does cause me to get angry faster though, especially when not awake enough to process why this is happening. I have had a much more competent and caring nurse in the past who asked me why I wanted my door shut and was willing to do that for me so she wouldn't cause me additional distress. Anyone who ends up in psychiatry probably already has raw, hurting emotions and needs to be treated like a human being.
OK, that was the negative part. The rest of the staff was kind and helpful, especially a nurse named Sage who showed me how my BP can be taken painlessly, and also the guard who intervened when I lost it could not have been more kind. He has a knack for helping people calm down.
Groups were very informative and I was encouraged with more tools to put in practice.
And when I remembered the psychiatrist who was responsible for my care, I came back and changed the previous rating of 2 stars, since he treated me with utmost dignity. He carefully listened to my concerns/fears about certain medications and allowed me to feel the way I do without being judged, that meant so much. He seems to know how to establish trust with his patients so lines of communication stay opened.
