Humans are not the only creatures that rely on vaccinations for good health and preventing serious sickness. Pets and animals also depend on vaccinations provided by their owners and vets. Doing not only protects the animal; pet owners and humans in regular contact also avoid getting sick from viruses or health problems animals can transfer to humans. So pet vaccinations are critical for any community that pets regularly interact with.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Eyes-Does the pet see normally? Are there signs of cataracts? Does the pet’s pupils respond to light? Is there abnormal discharge, corneal trauma or excessive redness?
Behavioral Counseling
Behavioral advantages- Often certain behavioral problems can be prevented or lessened by performing these surgeries before the cats reached sexual maturity. Female cats start having heat cycles any time after 6 months of age. Cats are “long day” breeders, meaning they breed during the long days of summer. Female cats are in heat during these summer days every other week until they are pregnant. While in heat, they yowl and howl (often in the middle of the night) and fight to get outside to find a mate. Most owners find this very disruptive. Unneutered cats are notorious for roaming as well. This unfortunately increases the risk of trauma and visits to the city pound. These cats develop marking habits and often start urinating in the house. Please keep in mind not all cats will have the same behavioral improvement and benefits with spaying and neutering. In addition, once behavioral problems start, performing these surgeries does not always improve the problem. Most of our patients at Animal Medical Center do benefit behaviorally with spaying and neutering, thus we recommend these surgeries before they reach sexual maturity.
Nutritional Counseling
Now let’s talk about the dry versus canned food dilemma. Both are appropriate for providing nutrition but is there ever a situation when your veterinarian will recommend one over the other??? The answer is yes. The vets at Animal Medical Center agree that dry food is better for the teeth and for weight control. When a cat chews the dry food (if they chew it!) it does help to knock off tartar and keep the teeth clean. Also, we see more weight control issues with pets on can food only. So as a general rule, our veterinarians will recommend dry food as the base of the cat’s diet. Now canned food can be given too. It can be added to the dry food as a treat. Canned food does have a lot of water in it so if a cat needs help with hydration, canned food may be best. Also, canned food is good for cats who are having mouth pain where it is tough to chew the dry. If you are not sure which to use, ask our vets at Animal Medical Center.

It takes 5-7 years for a heartworm to mature and cause problems. Therefore, it can take years for a dog with heartworms to show symptoms. Once the symptoms start, they often relate to heart and respiratory disease. This includes coughing, shortness of breath, dull coat, weight loss, decrease appetite, abdominal distension and lethargy. Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Disease prevention-Spaying a female cat decreases the incident of certain types of cancers. In addition, a common and potentially fatal disease called pyometra is prevented by spaying. Pyometra is build up of purulent discharge in the uterus in response to hormone shifts. This disease makes the cat acutely and severely ill. The only treatment is to spay the sickly cat to try and safe her life. In males, testicular cancer is prevented by neutering. In both sexes, spaying and neutering lessens the chances of your of contracting Feline Leukemia virus and Feline Immunodeficiency virus due to decrease roaming and cat interaction.

Hormonal (Endocrine) disorders-Sometimes skin problems are secondary to bigger diseases. For instance, hair loss with weight gain and lethargy can be caused by a low thyroid level (hypothyroidism.) Also, hair l oss with a bloated belly and big appetite can be caused by an overactive adrenal gland (hyperadrenocorticism.)

Kidney Disease Treatment
Young (less than 6 years old) healthy pets should have a physical examination at least once a year. This is usually done during the annual vaccination visit. Older pets (greater than 6) should have an exam twice yearly. This allows the veterinarian to possibly detect early problems and diseases. Dogs and cats age more quickly than humans, thus the importance of early detection is vital. Often, a dog or cat can can have healthier senior years if treatment for problems, like arthritis or kidney disease, are addressed at the earliest point possible. Veterinary Surgery
For the purpose of preventing pregnancy. Once the dog is anesthetized, an incision is made through the abdominal wall to expose the abdominal organs. The ovaries and the uterus are identified. Each ovary is removed first by excising the attachments and ligating the blood vessels with absorbable suture. Then the uterus is removed by making an incision through the uterine body wall near the cervix. This area is heavily sutured to prevent bleeding. Once all the reproductive organs are removed the muscles of the abdomen, subcutaneous tissue and the skin are sutured closed. A dog spay is invasive but also considered a routine surgery. Most dog’s undergoing a spay are healthy and recover quickly. The veterinary surgeons at Animal Medical Center usually take approximately 30-45 minutes to perform this procedure in uncomplicated cases. It may take longer when the dog is in heat, pregnant or over weight.
