Seventeen studies conclude that early success dissipates when the rewards are no longer offered (5-7). For example, a group of General Electric employees was given $750 if they quit and did not smoke for a year. Second group received a “wellness” invitation for a smoking cessation program. After a year, the financial incentive group's quit rate was 15%, the wellness program, only 5%; after 18 months, 9% and 3% respectively. So 91% of employees who entered the program because of the one-time financial incentive did not quit and still incur huge health care costs.
