Resin Composite
Composite resin fillings are the most common alternative to dental amalgam. They are sometimes called “tooth-colored” or “white” fillings because of their color. Composite resin fillings are made of a type of plastic (an acrylic resin) reinforced with powdered glass. Advantages of composite resin fillings include being able to blend in with surrounding teeth and they require minimal removal of healthy tooth structure for placement. They also bond to your tooth and may help hold it together.
Crowns
That said, however, the majority of dentistry performed is the removal and replacement of cracked, decayed or otherwise non-serviceable fillings. Dental insurance normally covers replacement of this type of fillings, whether they are mercury amalgam or white composite fillings. Insurance covers replacement pursuant to the contract whether the fillings are replaced with another filling, or if very large, with an onlay or crown.

Restorative Dentistry
On a basic level, the type of treatment needed will largely determine the answer to this question. General restorative dentistry can be completed in a relatively short period of time (weeks to months). This question can be more accurately answered after all needed records are completed and analyzed. An even better estimate of needed time can be given after the first phase of treatment is completed, and patient progress and cooperation can be determined. Patient cooperation is a critical component in determining total treatment time. High levels of cooperation will not only reduce treatment time, and (therefore) the cost of treatment, but will also increase the level of success we can achieve!

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth’s pulp (includes nerves, blood and lymph vessels), a small, thread-like tissue in the center of the tooth. Once the damaged, diseased or dead pulp is removed, the remaining space is cleaned, shaped and filled. There is controversy surrounding the use of this therapy due to dental medicine not being able to completely sterilize the tooth structure. There is a great deal of information available out there on the internet as well as in books regarding what each side of the controversy has to say.

Deep Cleaning
Scaling and root planning is a deep cleaning to remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar). It is the cornerstone of periodontal disease treatment and, following home care assessment, the first procedure a dentist will use. Scaling involves scraping tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planning smoothes the root surfaces of the teeth. These procedures may need to be performed with anesthetic.

Dentures
Candida biofilms are parasitic infectious structures that line feeding tubes, catheters, knee replacements, braces, dentures, bridges, etc.

Dental Implants
Currently, the only options to root canal treatment, when indicated, are extractions. Extracted teeth can be replaced with a cemented bridge, a removable partial denture or an implant. Implants can be restored with a crown, or in the case of multiple teeth with a bridge. Each of these procedures has advantages and dis-advantages.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Each patient’s treatment choice will be different depending on his/her needs and desires. Recommendations can range from oral surgery, ozone and laser therapy, homeopathic care or no treatment at all. To make an informed decision regarding which is most appropriate, considerable research into each option should be done, as each option has its own set of pros and cons.
Jaw Surgery
The bottom line is this: most people who need orthodontic treatment have crowded teeth. Therefore, you can start early to make room for teeth, or you accept that later your options become increasingly limited. Early intervention may ensure that more invasive and expensive options (extractions or jaw surgery) may be avoided. Functional orthodontics is progressive and, most importantly, shows excellent clinical results – wider smiles.
Flap Surgery
Flap Surgery — occasionally, surgery might be necessary if inflammation and deep pockets remain following treatment with deep cleaning and medications.
Tooth Extractions
It is believed that cavitations mainly develop as a direct result of incomplete healing from some form of trauma to the jawbone. There are many types of trauma that can begin this process. The list of such traumas may include tooth extractions, root canals, jaw surgery, and restorations (crowns or fillings) that are “left too high” and cause a mini-trauma with every bite. Other causes of cavitation formation are reduced or poor circulation in the jawbone, clotting disorders, and the use of steroids, blood clotting medications or some osteoporosis drugs. It has also been found that periodontal disease may increase the likelihood of a person developing a jawbone cavitation.

Orthodontics
Because there is no “School of Holistic Dentistry,” there is no standard by which the consumer can evaluate a “holistic dentist”. Every “Holistic Dentist’s” path is unique because their post-dental school education is unique and different. The education of some may have emphasized heavy metal (mercury) toxicity, or orthopedic orthodontics, while others may have focused on nutrition and preventative programs. Knowing a dentist’s educational background will give you a good idea what their beliefs and philosophies are, and will therefore help you determine who may be a good fit with your own personal beliefs.
Braces
An orthodontic examination can take place as early as two years old, when all the baby teeth have erupted and the upper and lower jaws function together. Early treatment to prevent and correct jaw alignments could be prescribed as early as age 2, 3 or 4. Just as with modern early orthopedic correction of crooked feet, early jaw orthopedics is better than delaying while crooked growth occurs. It is best to assume that your child will need full braces even after Phase One treatment. The period following Phase One treatment is called the “resting period,” during which growth and tooth eruption are closely monitored. Throughout this period, parents and patients are kept informed of future treatment recommendations.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry often focuses on replacing mercury “silver” amalgam fillings with white composites. Many “holistic / biological” dentists are concerned with mercury exposure to patients and staff during amalgam removal. When removing mercury fillings, Dr Hanus’ procedures are consistent with protocols currently deemed safe by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT.org ) of which he is a member. We encourage you to participate in choosing the materials placed in your teeth. This may be particularly important for people with chemical sensitivities.
