Arthritis
Inflammatory Arthritis - Swelling and heat (inflammation) of the joint lining causes a release of enzymes which soften and eventually destroy the cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus and psoriatic arthritis are inflammatory in nature.
Medical Weight Loss
Prior to surgery you will usually have tried some simple treatments such as simple analgesics, weight loss, anti-inflammatory medications, modification of your activities, walking sticks, physiotherapy.
Primary Care
Some insurance plans require referral for specialty care through your primary care practitioner. If appropriate referrals are not in place at the time of the appointment via your primary care practitioner, you will be responsible for your x-rays and consultation charges.
Emergency Care
Well the week has begun and as we settled into the routine of the week, we became familiar with the patients currently admitted to the hospital and their dispositions. We are working at a two operating room, 52-bed hospital that has a make shift ICU with 4beds, a spinal cord injury unit, a pediatric unit and an emergency room. We are in such close quarters that the ER, ICU, Med/Surgical beds and the OR are all within a 20 foot radius of each other. This hospital reminds me a lot of the Obras Socialialisd el Santo Hermano Pedro in Guatemala when we first began traveling down there. Hospital Bernard Mavs is one of the very few acute case hospitals in all of Haiti. Most hospitals here take care of the sick and not the acutely injured.

Ultrasound
A routine X-Ray of the knee, which includes a standing weight-bearing view is usually required. An MRI scan which looks at the cartilages and soft tissues may be needed if the diagnosis is unclear. There is little value in the use of Ultrasound in investigating knee problems.
MRI
Diagnosing injuries and disease begins with a thorough medical history, physical examination, and usually X-rays. Additional tests such as an MRI, or CT scan also may be needed. Through the arthroscope, a final diagnosis is made which may be more accurate than through "open" surgery or from X-ray studies.

Arthroscopy
The benefits of arthroscopy involve smaller incisions, faster healing, a more rapid recovery, and less scarring. Arthroscopic surgical procedures are often performed on an outpatient basis and the patient is able to return home on the same day.
Wound Care
The word has gotten out that we are here. The patient flow has begun from the French bringing in a load of patients from far away to us, as well as the US Army transporting six patients via Huey helicopter to our doorsteps. I feel like the MASH series when you hear the helicopter coming and Radar O’Reilly announces their arrival. It is either feast or famine. The patients are now a week and a half out from their initial injuries and in need of secondary wound care and external fixation.
