This procedure uses tiny amounts of radioactive material to examine different organ systems. These agents have been used in hundreds of thousands of patients with no known significant side effects or harm. Some of these exams may be used in addition to other exams, as nuclear medicine exams are often used to demonstrate function of an organ system, more than simply an image. These exams require written orders from a physician, usually the primary care physician, although many of the exams are requested by a specialist.

This exam utilizes high frequency ultrasound waves to look for inflammation of the epididymis,torsion of the testicle,suspected mass or abscess of the testicle. No preparation or injections are requires for the exam.

Radiology
You’ll receive a bill from the facility where your exam was performed. This is the hospital or facility charge for use of the imaging equipment, technicians, and supplies necessary to perform your test. The bill you receive from Houston Northwest Radiology Association is for the radiologist who interpreted your test and provided a report to your referring physician.

Also, because the radioactive substance decays quickly and is effective for a short period of time, it must be produced in a laboratory near the PET scanner. It is important to be on time for the appointment and to receive the radioactive substance at the scheduled time. PET must be done by a radiologist who has specialized in nuclear medicine and has substantial experience with PET. Most large medical centers now have PET services available to their patients. Medicare and insurance companies cover many of the applications of PET, and coverage continues to increase.
Mammography
Mammography is an excellent way to detect breast abnormalities, but in many cases it is not possible to tell from the imaging studies alone whether a growth is benign or cancerous. To make this determination it is necessary to obtain a tissue sample for microscopic examination. As an alternative to open surgical biopsy, which removes a larger specimen for microscopic analysis, a hollow needle may be passed through the skin into the suspicious lesion with the help of special breast x-rays. The sample of breast tissue obtained in this way can show whether the lesion is malignant or benign and the procedure is much less invasive than the surgical approach. A special computerized mammography machine uses intersecting coordinates to pinpoint the area of tissue change. This method is called stereotactic biopsy or x-ray-guided biopsy. A pathologist examines the removed specimen and makes a final diagnosis so that treatment planning can begin.
Computed Tomography
This technique uses x-rays to form a series of 3-D cross sectional images. Hundreds of thousands of tiny detectors are exposed and the computer forms the image from tiny squares or pixels. The x-ray exposure is frequently similar to or less than conventional x-rays of similar body parts. Little preparation is required for brain, spine, joint, or extremity exams, except occasionally avoiding solid foods, if the ordering physician has requested an exam requiring IV contrast.

Lesions
Lesions accompanied by diffuse calcium deposits scattered throughout the breast are difficult to target by stereotactic biopsy. Those lesions near the chest wall also are hard to evaluate by this method. If the mammogram shows only a vague change in tissue density but no definite mass or nodule, the x-ray-guided method may not be successful. Occasionally, even after a successful biopsy, the tissue diagnosis remains uncertain and a surgical biopsy will be necessary, especially when atypical or precancerous cells are found on core biopsy.
