Dental Examination

X-rays

Teeth Cleaning
During your child's dental cleaning, fluoride was placed on his or her teeth to help strengthen the enamel. Fluoride is irritating to the stomach if swallowed, and your child may have swallowed a small amount of fluoride during treatment. You can give your child a glass of milk to help neutralize the fluoride and minimize stomach pain.
Fluoride Treatment
First, we'll review and update your child's medical history. Then we'll provide a professional cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and stains which may lead to cavities and gum disease. Lastly, we'll apply a topical fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel and protect your child's teeth against decay. Digital dental radiographs (x-rays) will be taken if necessary. Dental Sealants
Stay involved with your child's oral hygiene and know what to look for so you can tell if good oral health is being maintained. It's important to not only look for "dirty" teeth, but check for signs of periodontal disease such as bleeding gums, swollen and bright red gums, gums that are receding away from the teeth, and bad breath. If necessary, Dr. Melissa can provide you with additional information regarding sealants, missing teeth, and wisdom teeth, and also counsel you and your child on the impact of oral piercings and tobacco use.
Space Maintainers
If adult teeth start to erupt where the prematurely lost baby tooth was positioned, please make an appointment to have your child evaluated for the removal of the space maintainer.

Orthodontics
On a professional level, I am certified in pediatric dentistry by the State of Michigan and maintain memberships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Association, and the Michigan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition, I maintain my physician staff privileges at Sparrow Hospital in order to treat children requiring general anesthesia. I am also an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Michigan Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Lastly, I have published several articles in professional journals on tongue cancer, replacement of lost primary teeth, and treatment modalities in administering anesthesia.
Braces
Some discomfort is to be expected after a space maintainer is placed. Space maintainers are similar to braces because they do not allow the teeth to move as much as they did before. The discomfort should diminish in two to three days. Children's Motrin and a soft diet during this time will help ease your child's pain.
