…to name several. In addition, low vision rehabilitation is offered to serve those who have a vision impairment caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, etc. Often persons who have these types of problems will have vision difficulties that interfere with reading and learning.
Ophthalmology
We tend to think about our individual sensory processors (our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, mouth and fingers) as separate systems, so we have highly specialized professions to treat each of them. Optometry and ophthalmology provide care of sight and the eyes, audiology for hearing and specialist in olfaction for smell. We usually get effective treatment for a specific sensory organ, but this specialized approach is not effective in dealing with problems that involve both the sensory and motor systems.

Persons with a TBI who have visual dysfunction can benefit from a neuro-visual rehabilitation evaluation. This exam is very different from a routine eye exam. Its purpose is to analyze in depth the relationship between the ambient visual process and the neuro-motor system using a variety of tests.

Neurologic events such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), and chronic neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy can directly affect posture, balance and spatial orientation; thus, these conditions significantly increase patients’ risk of fall (RoF)

When a CVA occurs the spatial visual process will be compromised affecting the balance in organizing support from the visual process for posture, balance and movement causing vision problems. Following a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), individuals initially tend to lean toward the side of the hemiparesis Paresis of one side of the body). The brain will attempt to compensate for this weight shift by shifting the visual midline away from the affected side. This is termed a Visual Midline Shift Syndrome (VMSS). When the visual midline shifts the effect is to weight shift away from the affected side. Rehabilitation following a CVA requires extensive physical and occupational therapy in an attempt to facilitate proprioceptive and spatial awareness on the affected side, through weight bearing, to improve posture and balance.
