The CyberKnife Program is a physician/hospital partnership with a team of CyberKnife specialists composed of board-certified physicians from multiple disciplines including neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, urology, interventional radiology, and radiation oncology. The CyberKnife is one of a limited number in the United States, and the only unit in Northeast Indiana. The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery system by Accuray Incorporated is the world’s only radiosurgery system that utilizes full-time stereotactic image guidance coupled with intelligent robotics.

Prostate Cancer
We have extensive experience in the use of Brachytherapy, which utilizes radioactive sources placed into or near regions of the body to be treated. Brachytherapy can be used as a treatment option in multiple cancer types, but most commonly in skin cancer, prostate cancer, cervix cancer, and breast cancer.

We currently have six prospective national and international phase II and III clinical trials open to the public that are studying the role of CyberKnife radiosurgery in the areas of medically inoperable and operable lung cancer, low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer, spine metastases, and brain metastases.

She received her CNA certificate in 2003 and worked in Assisted Living and Inpatient Neurology settings until 2007. Attending the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Melanie received her Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies in 2009.

MRI
3-D Conformal Radiation Therapy uses planning with CT, MRI, and/or PET images to deliver treatment to the tumor, usually from multiple directions through shaped fields. The beam characteristics do not continuously change as with IMRT.
Radiology
Before your course of treatment with CyberKnife, your team of physicians, nurses, radiology staff and other healthcare professionals will create a treatment plan based on diagnostic testing and your needs. The number of treatments varies from one person to the next, depending on tumor size, location and shape. In most cases, one to five treatments will deactivate or eradicate the cancer. Treatments last, on average, from 45 to 90 minutes.

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) delivers radiation from outside the body with a machine called a linear accelerator. External Beam Radiation Therapy can be used as the only modality of treatment or in combination with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or hormonal therapy, and can also be used prior to or following surgery, depending on the diagnosis and stage of disease. Although there can be side effects that develop gradually, the treatment itself is painless and relatively rapid.

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is one of the most technologically advanced treatment methods available. IMRT allows very precise external beam radiotherapy treatments. Rather than having a single large radiation beam pass through the body, with IMRT the radiation is effectively broken up into thousands of thin radiation beams, providing accuracy so that all beams intersect on the cancer, which minimizes harm to surrounding tissues.

She began her healthcare career as a phlebotomist in 1998. She became a medical laboratory scientist in 2002 and worked in the inpatient laboratory before transitioning into management in an outpatient setting. She received her nursing degree in 2007 where she has worked in preoperative, post-operative, and PACU in the hospital setting, as well as orthopedics, and has experience in nursing management. She received her MSN in Nursing Administration at Ball State University and her post Masters FNP at the University of Southern Indiana. After completing her NP certification, she spent 3 years in surgical oncology prior to joining ROA.

Robotic radiosurgery is a non-surgical treatment using a robotic arm with six degrees of freedom to deliver dozens to hundreds of very focused pencil-thin beams of high-energy photons to tumors or lesions deep within the body. This technology allows us to deliver very high doses of radiation to the target while minimizing the dose to the normal surrounding tissues. The CyberKnife system does not require the use of an invasive stereotactic head frame used with other systems, thereby eliminating any pain with the procedure. However, certain tumors may require needle placement of tiny markers to allow the CyberKnife to track the tumor as it moves within the body.
