A pelvic exam will check for ovarian or uterine abnormalities and cervical cancer. Depending on your age, a mammogram, bone density scan, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) test, or Pap smear may be ordered. If you are 40 or older, it is recommended that you schedule a clinical breast exam every year. For women in their 20s and 30s, a clinical breast exam should be scheduled every 2-3 years.

ABI testing (or ankle-brachial index testing) is a non-invasive and convenient way to detect the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is a condition in which the arteries in the arms or legs are blocked or narrowed. People with this condition have a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, leg pain and poor circulation. This test is occasionally recommend as part of a series of tests, including abdominal ultrasound and carotid ultrasound (which check the arteries in the neck). These tests are all performed to check for blocked or diseased arteries. If you are 50 or older, ask your doctor if you should schedule this test.

Joint aspiration is a procedure that utilizes a syringe and a needle to remove fluid from the space around the joints in the body. The most common joint aspiration sites are the shoulder, elbow, hip, wrist, knee and ankle. Patients are usually given a local anesthetic during the procedure; joint fluid is aspirated in order to relieve swelling and/or collect fluid for analysis. The fluid sample can help to diagnose a joint disorder or issue. Your physician may also use X-rays, CT scans or an arthroscopy to further help with a diagnosis.

If you have had a hysterectomy or your cervix has been removed and you do not have a history of cervical cancer or abnormal Pap results, you do not need to schedule a Pap smear. If you are 65 or older and your last three tests were normal, with no abnormal test results within the past 10 years, you will no longer need to schedule Pap smears.

Skin Cancer
Moles are noncancerous skin growths that appear as small, dark brown spots. They are caused by clusters of pigmented cells and usually develop during childhood. While they are mostly harmless and do not produce any symptoms, monitoring your moles and other pigmented skin patches is important for detecting malignant melanoma–the most serious form of skin cancer. If you notice that your mole has changed color or size, contact your doctor immediately.
Dermatology
At our office in Encinitas, we do provide dermatology exams to our patients. Our physicians are specially trained to check your skin for any issues. Your medical history will also be taken into account. If you have any spots on your body that you are worried about, we encourage you to discuss this with our staff. Any notable changes to your moles should be inspected and discussed. If we do suspect that a spot may be cancerous, we will order a biopsy.

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on physical fitness and the prevention of injuries that result from sports and exercise.
Physical Therapy
These conditions take more time to develop than chronic conditions and might progress over time. Certain chronic diseases have warning signs while other have none.
