Overall
Harbortown Market should be shut down !

Never before have I seen such a beautiful store that smelled so bad when you walk in the store. This store looks clean but a peek in the backrooms and deli and meat dept. and you will see the filthy conditions from a lack of proper cleaning. Another wrote that the food spoils quickly no doubt to the unsanitary prep areas.

If the health inspectors weren't in the owners back pocket this store would definitly be shut down. I talked to the owner, (Tom George) and brought up my concerns to a deaf ear.

It's a shame we dont have a Whole Foods or a Trader Joes to put these slumlord owners into early retirement. Sooner or later people will get food poisoning from their lack of proper cleaning. I offered my expertise having been in the grocery business for 40 years but the bottom line is Tom George only cares about his pocket and not the lives and health of his customers. The first smart grocer to realize this can open a similar store and put Harbortown market out of business. I you live in the area and shop in this store take a look at the prep areas and DEMAND THAT THEY CLEAN UP THEIR ACT or CALL THE HEALTH DEPT. 313-876-4000

Overall
Not so great....

So Detroit has a big issue with grocery stores. They're so few of them, and limited in the products they supply. Harbortown market is no exception.

They have a great number of "specialty" items, but they severely lack in quality of the basics.

Produce - their fruits and vegetables are never fresh. Every time I come to the store looking for onions, i find last week's onions sitting there with the outer-most layers peeled off to improve the appearance, and speckles of mold.

Meat/Deli selections - it's alright, but i tend to notice that their products go bad fairly quick soon after purchasing.

Overpriced - Just because it has the appearance of a posh, and upscale grocery store in downtown Detroit does not give them the right to hike up the prices! I figure they can get away with it because people are turned off to the few other grocery stores available in downtown Detroit because of the external appearances (solicitors, graffiti, and tacky hand-written deal signs do not strike a shopper with much confidence).

Sure I continued to shop at this market when I needed something, but it was purely out of convenience. I have on occasion avoided this store, and made an effort to drive out to the Dearborn Walmart for a better selection and prices.
