Dr. Alaina Kronenberg graduated with distinction from Wayne State University Medical School at the top of her medical school class, as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Alaina Kronenberg was the chief resident in her last year of ophthalmology residency at the Long Island Jewish Hospital in Queens, New York. Dr. Alaina Kronenberg has been practicing ophthalmology in Michigan since she completed her residency in 2004.
Macular Degeneration
The macula is a part of the retina in the back of the eye that ensures that our central vision is clear and sharp. Most of your vision comes from the macula. Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a blinding eye disease that can cause gradual loss of your central vision. You may experience anything from a blurry, gray or distorted area to a blind spot in the center of vision. Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. The development of a cataract is quite common with aging. Symptoms of cataracts are blurry vision at distance and/or near, glare, light sensitivity and possibly double vision. Patients may experience difficulty driving especially at night, bright sunlight or in poor weather conditions. The cataracts cause haziness in the vision and fading of colors and grow over time. Sometimes the development of a cataract may cause frequent changes in the glasses prescription.
Cataract Surgery
The early stages of cataract development may be asymptomatic. Most people develop a cataract as they age. A cataract is usually slow growing. Some diseases such as poorly controlled diabetes, trauma and long term systemic steroid use can sometimes make a cataract grow faster and sometimes at a younger age. It may be several years from when a cataract is diagnosed to when cataract surgery is required to restore the vision.

Diabetic Retinopathy
The chances of developing diabetic eye disease is related to the length of time you have been a diabetic and the control of your blood sugars. With diabetic retinopathy changes to your vision may not be noticeable at first. In its advanced stages, the disease can cause blurred or cloudy vision, floaters and blind spots and, eventually possibly total blindness.

Ultrasound
At present, the only effective treatment for cataracts is surgical removal of the cloudy lens. In no-stitch surgery, a cataract is removed by making a small incision in the front of the eye. The incision is tunnel-like, and self seals when the surgery is completed, reducing recovery time. A highly sophisticated ultrasound instrument is inserted into the eye that breaks up the opaque lens into tiny fragments that are then suctioned out through the instrument’s hollow tubing.
