Dr. Echevarria practiced in the Rio Grande Valley from 2002 to 2005, then moved to Kingsville, Texas where he practiced Primary Care Optometry and then joined Coastal Bend Eye Center in 2019. Dr. Echevarria is originally from Luquillo, Puerto Rico. From a young age, he developed an interest in Biology, so he attended the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus where he did his undergraduate work and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness for aging adults. It is often referred to as the “sneak thief of eyesight” because it causes irreversible damage before individuals even experience any symptoms. Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve, the connection between the eye and the brain. The optic nerve transfers the images we see to the brain to be recognized, translated, and coded. When the optical nerve becomes damaged, the delivery route for the images becomes blocked, preventing the brain from receiving image signals. If the brain does not receive these messages, we can no longer see the image. Damage to the optic nerve thus results in vision loss.

Macular Degeneration
The Amsler Grid is a helpful tool for home monitoring of the central 10 degrees of the visual field. In particular, it is often used to detect problems with the macula, the area of the retina that is responsible for our sharp central vision. Some problems of the macula can be treated if they are caught early, for example, wet or exudative age-related macular degeneration (Wet AMD).
Laser Eye Surgery
Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an FDA-approved surgical procedure intended to reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses. The most commonly performed vision correction procedure, LASIK is performed on nearly 1 million patients each year to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by permanently altering the shape of the cornea, the eye’s thin, transparent covering. Corneal reshaping increases the eye’s focusing power and improves vision.
Cataracts
A cataract is the gradual clouding of the part of your eye known as the crystalline lens. Cataracts occur when there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This buildup prevents light from passing through the lens, causing some loss of vision. It is not known what causes the buildup of the protein responsible for clouding the lens.
