I did not like the extra skin on my upper eyelids. During my adult life, I could not wear eye makeup like everyone else because my lids were completely “hooded.” It used to be an aesthetic issue, but in my 50s, it also became a physical issue as the excess skin on my top lids became so heavy that it was “work” to hold my eyes open. I used to occasionally use my fingers to lift up my lids just to see how nice it would be to not have all that skin there. I also had bags under my lids and was actually more self-conscience about that, which became more pronounced the older I got. Smiling made it look worse. After pondering eye-lid surgery for about 20 years, I finally asked my primary care for a referral.

Thyroid
Patients that have over or under active thyroid disease or even euthyroid (normal) Graves’ disease can develop associated eye and eyelid problems. This is believed to be caused by thyroid hormones triggering an autoimmune response in the fat and muscles behind and around the eyes. Even when the systemic disease process is clinically stable, there can be edema (swelling), exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyes), upper or lower eyelid retraction, hypertrophied contracted eye muscles with secondary double vision, and in some instances excessive orbital fat which can hemiate into the eyelids.

Computed Tomography
Revisions are rarely necessary when eyelid levels are periodically checked during surgery, and the incidence of diplopia after orbital decompression has been reduced by a preoperative CT scan to screen out individuals at high risk.

Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Allen Putterman was honored at the Spring meeting of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Bahamas on May 31st, 2019. He received the Dortzbach Award which is given for significant contribution to the field of oculoplastic surgery through outstanding teaching, academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement, and for dedication throughout his profession.

Botox
Botox injections can be given to create a smoother skin appearance in areas of over active muscles, such as over the frown muscles, forehead, and the “crow’s feet” area of the outer eyelids. At times, Botox and Restylane or Juvederm injections are given together to get an enhanced effect.
Brow Lift
If the upper eyelid folds are redundant due to drooping eyebrows, the doctor can elevate the brows and lids by removing excess skin above the brow or on the scalp, thus creating an appearance of greater alertness and vivacity.
Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid retraction (pulling downward) and ectropion (turning outward) can occur as a complication from previous eyelid surgery or from trauma (accidents). This can cause eye irritation and dryness, corneal problems, decreased vision and tearing.
Plastic Surgery
The University of Illinois 2nd Allen M. Putterman Symposium honored Dr. Allen Putterman on 1/18 & 1/19 in Park City, Utah. Many Oculofacial plastic surgeons, including 6 of Dr. Putterman’s former fellows, gave lectures on new techniques in this field. Dr. Putterman gave a lecture on his oculofacial plastic surgery experience, which included many of the instruments and procedures he has developed and what led him to do this, as well as how he learned to write concise scientific publications and textbooks. He presented this to show how the oculofacial attendees can do this as well.
Face Lift
Dr. Putterman does a simplified facelift to decrease jowls. It is done by releasing skin from around the ears and face and tightening the fibrotic tissue underneath skin. He commonly combines this with a cheek mid-facelift done through a lower eyelid approach, which pulls the midface almost straight upward. The facelift then pulls the lower face obliquely toward the ears, which decreases the jowls.
Blepharoplasty
Drooping of my upper eyelids had caused a loss of vision. Dr Putterman performed a bilateral upper lid functional blepharoplasty on July 25, 2017 with absolutely wonderful results. He and his staff was very thorough with the pre-op exam and gave good, complete explanations and information before and after surgery.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Putterman is very gentle, experienced, and very “patient oriented”. He even returned my calls on Sunday from his home! His staff is exceptional, and they, too, were responsive and helpful whenever I had questions or concerns. Cosmetic surgery is never an easy decision, but rest assured that when you select Dr. Putterman, you will be in the hands of one of the most experienced, reputable, and knowlegeable surgeons just about anywhere. I am very pleased with the results of my lower blepharoplasty.
