Proctor holds multiple patents on the pharmaceutical use of nitrone and nitroxide spin traps and spin labels. These agents show promise in the treatment and prevention of a variety of human disease conditions[45] Potential applications include hair losss treatment, treatment and prevention of cancer, neurological diseases such as stroke, senile dementia, and Parkinson's disease, as well as a variety of inflammatory and degenerative conditions. Such agents are also useful in the treatment of hair loss or alopecia. One such agent, TEMPOL, is currently in clinical trials for radiation-induced hair loss [3]. Other clinical trials with TEMPOL and its derivatives include treatment of macular degeneration and hypertension. Also see:..[46][47] for media reports on Dr Proctor's work in hair loss and hair loss treatment. In a new patent[2] Dr Proctor claims other pharmaceutical uses for these compounds in the treatment of human diseases. These include treatment of fibrocystic disease of breast, menstrual cramps and their associated symptoms, migraine, hemorrhoids, neuropathic pain, cyclic vomiting syndrome, and peridontitis. The patent also claims treatment of the symptoms of influenza, herpes zoster and herpes simplex.
Cataracts
In the late 70's, we found that SODase prevents stress-induced hair loss in experimental animals. This was an incidental observation while we were trying to prevent diabetic cataract in rodents with the copper/zinc peptide antiinflammatory agent Orgotein, a purified SODase. BTW, Orgotein is FDA-approved in the US as the veterinary drug Palosein. Such diabetic animals undergo massive hair loss.

Prostate Cancer
These agents have significant hair regrowth properties.. They are also useful as adjuvants to other hair loss treatment where they 1) make it work better 2) Help prevent tolerance. Every few years, a new antiandrogen will be presented as the ultimate "solution for balding". This has yet to work out. E.g., clinical trials with cyoctal, arguably the most potent topical antiandrogen, were terminated because of lack of effectiveness. Even castration, the commonly used treatment for prostate cancer, generally doesn't do a lot for balding and hair loss.

Multiple Sclerosis
Uric acid is a strong reducing substance present in uniquely high levels in human blood. In a 1970 paper in the journal Nature[22] Proctor suggested that in primates uric acid partially substitutes for another strong reducing substance, ascorbic acid (vitamin-C), e.g., as an antioxidant and enzyme cofactor. Uric acid is now thought to be the major blood antioxidant. Similarly, in 1972, Proctor reported the conditional pro-oxidant properties of uric acid and further proposed that oxidative stress figures in the pathogenesis of hyperuricemic syndromes in general.[23][24] Subsequent researchers have confirmed the putative role of urate-induced oxidative stress in many human diseases. These include stroke and atherosclerosis,[25] as well as gout, metabolic syndrome,[26] diabetes,[27] and hypertension.[28] Similarly, the antioxidant role of uric acid is thought to figure in Parkinsonism,[29] stroke[30] and multiple sclerosis.[31] A clinical trial is now underway using uric acid as an antioxidant neuroprotectant in acute ischemic stroke [32]

Á-RIs), finasteride and dutasteride, have been approved for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms, due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, with marked clinical efficacy. Finasteride is also approved for treatment of hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Although the adverse side effects of these agents are thought to be minimal, the magnitude of adverse effects on sexual function, gynecomastia, depression, and quality of life remains ill-defined.

Abstract: Alopecia areata is a common cause of nonscarring alopecia that occurs in a patchy, confluent, or diffuse pattern. Dermoscopy is a noninvasive technique for the clinical diagnosis of many skin diseases. Topical minoxidil solution 5% and platelet rich plasma are important modalities used in treatment of alopecia areata. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of PRP versus topical minoxidil 5% in the treatment of AA by clinical evaluation and trichoscopic examination. Ninety patients were allocated into three groups; the first was treated with topical minoxidil 5% solution, the second with platelets rich plasma injections, and the third with placebo. Diagnosis and follow up were done by serial digital camera photography of lesions and dermoscopic scan before and every 1 month after treatment for 3 months. Patients treated with minoxidil 5% and platelets rich plasma both have significant hair growth than placebo. Patients treated with platelets rich plasma had an earlier response in the form of hair regrowth, reduction in short vellus hair and dystrophic hair unlike patients treated with minoxidil and control In conclusion, platelets rich plasma is more effective in the treatment of alopecia areata than topical minoxidil 5% as evaluated by clinical and trichoscopic examination.

The pathophysiology of many autoimmune diseases is unknown and recently oxidative stress has come to light as a possible triggering mechanism. Recent investigations attempting to link autoimmune skin diseases and oxidative stress have had varying degrees of success. In this article, we review the current literature regarding antioxidants in hair loss due to alopecia areata, pemphigus vulgaris and other blistering diseases, vitiligo, and psoriasis, and suggest possible future studies and treatment options.
