X-rays
One new dental technology involving dental X-rays is digital X-rays. They offer the advantage of an 80 percent reduction in radiation, no need for film or processing chemicals, production of a nearly instantaneously image, and the ability to use color contrast in the image. Digital radiography is a form of X-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional x-rays.

Daily brushing and flossing will keep the formation of calculus to a minimum but won’t prevent it completely. Periodontal maintenance procedures (also known as supportive periodontal therapy) are designed to minimize the recurrence and progression of periodontal disease in patients that have been previously treated for periodontal problems. This is an ongoing prevention program of periodontal cleanings and evaluations.

Excess gum tissue is removed, exposing more of the tooth. The gum line is then evenly sculpted to develop your new, broad smile.
Bridges
There are other routes a patient can take to replace missing teeth, including dentures and bridges; however, dental implants are a much better solution for many reasons. Adjacent teeth do not have to be altered to support an implant, such as with bridgework. This is significant for your overall oral health by leaving more of your own teeth untouched. With a tooth-supported fixed bridge, the adjacent teeth are ground down to support the fixed bridge. Dental implants are integrated into the structure of your bone, preventing gum recession and possible bone loss that can sometimes be attributed to bridgework and dentures. Dental implants function just as your natural teeth do, offering you more comfort and stability than conventional dentures.

These procedures are usually done in the doctor’s office under local anesthesia with I.V. sedation or occasional general anesthesia. The procedures themselves are without pain. Post-operatively, there will be some swelling and some mild to moderate discomfort, especially from other procedures performed, such as tooth extraction, cyst removal, etc. Your doctor will prescribe an oral analgesic to help relieve your discomfort. If a more invasive second procedure is required to obtain bone (i.e. from your hip, chin area, etc.) then your post-operative discomfort will be increased but still manageable.

The tooth is removed and the remaining tooth socket is thoroughly cleaned of all inflamed and infected tissue. An appropriate bone grafting material (e.g. Cadaver) is carefully placed into the extraction socket. GBR membrane (e.g. BioGide) is often placed over the grafted material Sutures placed into the gum tissue allow proper healing of the surrounding soft tissues.
