The most common findings in persistently irregular cycles are thyroid disorders and diabetes or the metabolic syndrome related to polycystic ovaries. Specific blood tests will also help assess how your ovaries are working and test for premature ovarian insufficiency.

During your assessment, you will undergo a completely painless DEXA scan. This will involve you lying down in a comfortable position on a bed for 40 minutes while your body is scanned by a machine. Unlike an MRI or CT scan, DEXA does not enclose your body in a tube, so you will not feel claustrophobic.
