Cats and dogs do not show oral pain the same way people do partly because of their instincts to eat in order to survive and to not show illness. We know that these dental problems do cause pain, just as it does in people, but the problem can be quite severe before we can detect it in our pets. One of four cats age 5 or over have at least one oral resorptive lesion. Unfortunately, this painful condition is often undetectable to the naked eye. Without the help of X-rays, most cat owners don’t even know their pet is suffering.

Nutritional Counseling
Karin was raised in Rapid City and showed a passion for caring for others at an early age, working for several years at a local nursing home. She graduated from National American University in 2012 to become a veterinary technician. Her favorite part of working at MVAH is creating lasting relationships with pets and their people and enjoys teaching clients about nutrition and weight management. Karin keeps our shelves and pharmacy stocked with everything we need to work with your pets! She loves all things outdoors: hiking, kayaking, camping, and takes her husband Jake and 2 dogs Coco and Spike with her on these adventures.

At Mountain View Animal Hospital, we take additional safety precautions, provide extensive monitoring and exceptional pain control to all of our surgical patients.

We have all of our surgical patients connected to an ECG heart rate monitor, blood pressure monitor, sPO2 monitor (oxygen level), CO2 monitor (carbon dioxide level), isoflurane (gas anesthesia), temperature monitor, respiratory breathing monitor, and a fluid pump.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
The most common disease in dogs and cats is periodontal disease. By age three, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have it. Periodontal disease is a progressive inflammation of the supporting structures surrounding the teeth and is the main cause of early tooth loss, mouth pain and oral infections. It is caused by bacteria and their toxins destroying the teeth and gums. This bacteria can also cause heart, liver, kidney, lung and gastrointestinal disease or organ failure.

Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Serena grew up on her family’s ranch near Prairie City, SD. She received her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from South Dakota State University. From there, she attended Iowa State University – College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, Iowa. After graduating in 2003, Dr. Serena began her career in the suburbs of Chicago as an equine practitioner. She then worked for a mixed animal hospital in Pipestone, MN/Flandreau, SD before settling down closer to home in the Black Hills. Dr. Serena enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine with a special interest in soft tissue surgery, management of endocrine disorders, and physical rehabilitation/arthritis management for her aging patients.

Laboratory Services
Our state-of-the-art IDEXX laboratory equipment is able to perform a myriad of tests including, but not limited to: CBC (Complete Blood Count), chemistry panels, cortisol levels, bile acids, and thyroid levels.
X-Ray
Digital dental radiography is an integral part of performing a complete dental exam and oral assessment associated with dental cleanings at our hospital. Doctors get instant information about the health of our patients’ teeth, surrounding gum tissue and bone support. The majority of dental disease in cats and dogs lies under the gum line and digital radiography gives us the ability to assess this.
Dental Radiology
Our dental radiology machine allows us to take dental radiographs in order to see the condition of a specific tooth or the mouth under the gum line. After taking the radiograph and developing the film we have results in about 3 minutes. This helps us to see the root of a tooth to determine the treatment protocol for your pet.
