Extensive sun exposure can cause brown spots (known medically as lentigenes) of various shapes and sizes most commonly on the face, chest, forearms, and backs of the hands. This causes a blotchy and uneven mottled complexion that results in a more aged skin appearance. Daniela Leslie is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who provides both medical and cosmetic dermatology services to patients at Manhattan Beach Dermatology. She received her Master's degree and Nurse Practitioner education at UCLA and has been practicing in aesthetic medicine since 2002. As a certified instructor for the cosmetic use of Botox and facial fillers for aesthetic enhancement, Daniela travels to other states to train physicians and nurse practitioners in cosmetic procedures. Glaucoma
Latisse makes lash growth possible because of its active ingredient: bimatoprost. Although the precise mechanism of action is unknown, Latisse is believed to affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways: first, it increases the length of this phase, and second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase. Allergan, the manufacturers of Botox, first used the active ingredient in Latisse as a medicated eye drop to treat glaucoma. Many patients using this medication also began to grow longer, fuller and darker lashes as a side effect. This led Allergan to study the medication's active ingredient, bimatoprost, specifically for growing lashes. After a clinical trial, Latisse was approved by the FDA in December of 2008.

Labor and Delivery
Both men and women can suffer from hair loss of many different causes. For men, the most important type is called androgenetic alopecia, thinning caused by genetically determined sensitivity of hair follicles to testosterone, the male hormone. In these individuals, at a certain age, exposure of hair follicles to testosterone in the bloodstream causes a progressive miniaturization of the follicles. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment can be initiated with oral and topical medications to halt further progression of the alopecia. For women, increased shedding can be due to stress, vitamin deficiency, genetics, poor diet, childbirth, and various medical conditions such as thyroid deficiency and anemia. Since the best treatment involves correcting the condition causing the alopecia, laboratory studies are indicated to search for an abnormality.

Gastroenterology
Cervical Cancer
A sexually transmitted disease that is caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV), genital warts are characterized by the presence of skin colored to tan bumps with a convoluted surface. Lesions are of particular concern in women as certain high risk subtypes of HPV can cause precancerous cervical lesions and even cervical cancer. The most widely used treatment is liquid nitrogen freezing (cryotherapy), but topical treatments are also available. A vaccine is also available for those who have not yet been exposed to the HPV virus. The use of condoms can help reduce the transmission of the disease.

Radiation Therapy
• Radiation therapy is another option for patients who are poor surgical candidates. The downside is that radiation treatment usually requires five treatments per week for several weeks at a hospital so it can be very time consuming. Side effects include painful inflammation, skin ulcers and unsightly scars. Radiation also can sometimes leave patients feeling tired and exhausted during the treatment period. Ironically, radiation therapy itself can be the cause of skin cancers years later. Still, in selected patients this may be the most appropriate method.

Mohs Surgery
It is important to know that no procedure can absolutely guarantee total removal of every cancer cell. Recurrence is always a possibility. However, recurrence rates are lowest with Mohs surgery. There is always a risk of bleeding, infection, and abnormal healing. Additionally, during surgery, small nerve endings are cut, which may result in temporary or permanent numbness in and around the area of surgery. With larger or deeper tumors, nerves controlling movement of muscles could be cut which may result in permanent weakness in a portion of the face. Fortunately, this is a very rare complication. There may be some minor swelling, itching, or pain in the surgical area. Additional surgery may be needed if poor healing takes place. Your doctor will be with you for every step to assure smooth healing and recovery.

Excessive sweating can involve the face, underarms, hands, and feet. This is a genetic disorder that can be treated with prescription strength antiperspirants, oral medication, and even surgery for severe cases. Skin Cancer
A nevus is the medical term for a mole; an atypical nevus is an abnormal mole that may be considered pre-cancerous in that it may have a higher risk than a normal mole of developing melanoma skin cancer. Atypical nevi may have some of the ABCD characteristics of melanoma such as a symmetry, b order irregularity, c olor variegation and large d iameter. When biopsied, the cells and architecture of an atypical nevus when viewed under a microscope may share some features of melanoma skin cancer. If the pathologist determines that the mole is only mildly atypical, the biopsy site can be monitored and further removal is warranted only if the mole grows back. Moles that are determined to be moderately or severely atypical should be completely excised to remove any remaining atypical cells. Patients with one or more atypical nevi have an increased risk of developing melanoma and/or additional atypical nevi in the future and should be screened regularly by us.

Eczema
Patients with eczema or atopic dermatitis are often described as having skin that is itchy, dry, sensitive, and easily irritated. The skin can become inflamed as a result of many factors: dryness, aging of the skin, cold weather, over washing, a reaction to topical or oral medications, and contact with irritants as well as underlying skin diseases. Treatment of dermatitis entails replenishing the skin's moisture, calming the inflammation, and removing any possible allergic triggers. This can be achieved by utilizing a combination of cleansers, moisturizers, prescription oral and topical medications.
Fungus
Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus that invades the outer layer of the skin. Those afflicted develop an itchy rash with redness, scaling, and sometimes blisters on the bottom of the feet (especially in between the toes). Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments such as a locker room floor or by the side of a pool, and as a result, fungal infections are commonly found on athletes or those individuals with sweaty feet. Athlete's foot is contagious, either by direct skin-to-skin contact or through towels, shoes, and floors where people walk barefoot. Treatment is based on the degree of severity and can involve topical creams or oral anti-fungal medicines. Keeping the feet clean and dry, using a separate towel to dry feet, and using foot powders are essential in keeping the fungus away.
Lesions
This is a skin condition characterized by are small, firm, reddish-purple bumps on the back of the neck, usually in people of darker skin types. The lesions are a form of scar that is the result of infection, acne, or hair follicle inflammation in that area. They can be itchy, painful, and cosmetically annoying. The bumps can grow bigger and coalesce into large raised patches. There are several treatments available to address this condition including injections, lasers, antibiotics, and topical lotions as well as surgery.
Chemical Peels
Propionibacterium acnes begin to proliferate. Under such conditions, the pore becomes inflamed and swollen resulting in red bumps and white heads. Hormones drive sebum production which explains why so many teens suffer with acne, as do women later in life, known as adult-onset acne. We utilize many great acne treatments in combination: our primary goal is to calm the inflammation, decrease oil gland production, kill bacteria, and unclog plugged up pores. Tiny injections of cortisone into inflamed lesions can stop the inflammation quickly to speed resolution and prevent scarring or lasting discoloration of the skin. During acne facials performed by our trained medical assistants, closed comedones (skin-colored bumps that represent plugged pores) are extracted before they develop into large inflamed bumps. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a genetic immune system disorder that leads to the development of thick, inflamed, red skin patches with overlying white scale.

Allergies
The classic example of acute contact dermatitis is the blistering, oozing, itchy rash from skin contact with poison ivy, oak or sumac. More chronic cases are characterized by red scaly patches that mimic eczema. Common body locations include the eyelid, neck, waist line and may be due to nickel in jewelry, fragranced detergents used in clothing or from perfume or cologne. Allergy testing can be done if it is difficult to determine the allergic substance that is triggering the eruption. Treatment involves avoidance of the substance to which the person is allergic and cortisone creams to treat the skin rash.
